Disinfecting and infection control is important in any facility, however, is critically important in hospitals and healthcare settings. When disinfecting, one item that can be overlooked are personal items such as cell phones. A study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene indicated that, for mobile phones used by medical staff in hospitals, 95% of phones were colonized with bacteria such as skin flora, and 5% of phones contained pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, junior medical staff, in particular interns, were found to have the greatest contamination of their phones.
