How do you approach a red stain on carpet? Traditionally, the heat transfer method has been proven to work in removing red stains. For this procedure, one would first clean the stain, wet the stain with a chemical product, agitate the chemical it into the carpet fiber using a carpet spotting brush, and then use a damp towel and iron to transfer the stain out. But can all red stains be treated the same way? No. Below are steps that you can take to optimize red stain removal from carpet.

Removing synthetic red stains

Synthetic red stains include: medicines, cosmetics, Kool-Aid, food dyes and coloring, and more. For this type of stain, a reducing agent product is recommended. Reducing agent products include products that contain sodium bisulfate, hydrosulfite, etc… . Carpet Spotter would be the product of choice to use with the heat transfer method for removing synthetic red stains.

Removing organic red stains

Organic red stains include: red wine, food coloring, juice, ketchup and other condiments, and more. For this type of stain, an oxidizing chemical product can be used. Oxidizing products include products that contain hydrogen peroxide, sodium percarbonate, etc… . X-Ray would be the recommended choice to use with the heat transfer method for removing organic red stains.

Before using any products on your carpet, be sure to perform a spot check in an inconspicuous area. Always consult your carpet manufacturer for the appropriate cleaning techniques and carpet warranty information.

For more instructions and information about cleaning specific types of spot and stain, refer to the Carpet Care Method Bulletin 1401, Multi-Clean’s Carpet Spotting Guide, or the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI).
